The Key to Preserving Your Irrigation System? Winterization

Winterizing your irrigation system in the Fall could save you from major leaks when you begin using your system again in the Spring. When water remains in your system’s pipes, valves, and fittings, cold Winter temperatures cause it to freeze and expand. This expansion is strong enough to burst parts of your irrigation system.

Here is Greenway Irrigation’s basic Winterization process:

  1. Shut off all water to the system.
  2. Flush water from the system with compressed air.
  3. Identify system issues.
  4. Remove backflow preventer for winter storage.
  5. Perform measures to prevent debris intrusion.

You don’t have to take our word for it.

"...great job of installing and training me."

“Greenway installed our system two years ago and did a great job of installing and training me. System has worked fine ever since. The quality of the equipment (Hunter) has been very good. I have not had to call for service, other than the winter removal and spring replacement of the backflow valve ($200) annually. Very pleased.”

"I look forward to expanding my use of this company as they handle lighting, landscape, and hearthscape."

“I was very impressed with this company’s service. Carlos was very knowledgeable about the irrigation system and was able to winterize everything within the allotted time. I look forward to expanding my use of this company as they handle lighting, landscape, and hearthscape. Excellent company. Highly recommend.”

    Bill B

"...he went above and beyond what was expected."

“Juan Carlos performed our irrigation winter shut down. He was very professional and took exceptional care of us. I would say he went above and beyond what was expected.”

"They completed everything in under an hour and replaced two sprinkler heads."

“Greenway Irrigation just completed my winter shut-down of my sprinkler system. I have my start-up, mid-season and winter shut-down serviced by Greenway. They completed everything in under an hour and replaced two sprinkler heads. Thanks to Rachel & Abraham I have had another worry free year with my system.”

    Alexis L

"Greenway has always done a great job with the winter shut down and start up and minor and major repairs and their rates are reasonable."

“We have been using Greenway since we moved to Cary in 2002; the previous owners had been using them and so we stuck with them. We have never once considered making a change for our irrigation service. Greenway has always done a great job with the winter shut down and start up and minor and major repairs and their rates are reasonable. Leslie works in the office and is always so pleasant to speak to for scheduling and billing. For a company to not give you a reason to look elsewhere for over 15 years, that says a lot.”

    Emily M

"We have been with this company for years and they always offer top notch services, timely service reminders..."

“We are pleased with our irrigation system and love the ease of winterizing our system. Greenway Irrigation techs are very knowledgeable and professional. They always make sure our system is ready for the winter months and setup in the spring. We have been with this company for years and they always offer top notch services, timely service reminders, (email/phone) communications, and always quick to respond to our requests.”

Common Questions on Winterization

  1. My system is supposed to be self-draining–is it?
There is a chance it will work properly, but sometimes water still gets trapped. Because Winterization is such an easy process that delivers big results, it’s not really worth finding out.
  2. Are you familiar with my irrigation system’s brand?
We service every brand, including the big ones like Toro, Rainbird, and Hunter. Our experience and great reputation go all the way back to 1992. (So, yes.)
  3. Is it too late if temperatures already dipped below freezing?
Not necessarily. Many times, the first cold night won’t chill the ground deeply enough to freeze it, even if you see frost on your grass. But the sooner you act, the better.
